Ashley + Karen’s Favorite Books of 2016

Favorite Books of 2016 | Caledonia Public Library

Happy New Year everyone!

Not only has it has been a year of fun changes at the library (a new director, expanded hours, and new programs), it has been a year of fun books.   So many books, in fact, that when I asked our librarians to share their favorite books that they read in 2016 they had to narrow it down by only choosing books that were published in 2016!

Here are Ashley and Karen’s picks.  Have you read any of them?

Digital Resources and E-Reading

ereading

This column first appeared in the November 2, 2016 edition of the Caledonia Argus and was written by Ashley Dress, Library Director.

At this point in time, libraries are more accessible than ever. Of course, we still operate as a brick and mortar building where you can check out books, attend programs or just come in to chat with us (we love visitors!), but we have so much that is available to our patrons outside of our walls.

E-readers can be really great for keeping your personal library in one place at one time and can also save a lot of room in your luggage if you’re planning on taking books with you on a trip. If you have any mobile device, like an iPad or Kindle, you’ve taken the first step to being able to access e-books and e-audiobooks. There are many places to download these from the Internet, but they come at a price. The library has access to the newest books, and they’re free with a library card. Download the OverDrive app from iTunes or Google Play, enter your library card information, and you can start reading. If all of this sounds too complicated to do on your own, the library is offering two classes to help patrons understand this process. You’ll leave class with a couple of books on your device, ready for you to read. The classes will be held on Thursday, December 1st and Thursday, December 8th from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the library. Call 725-2671 to sign up. If those don’t work with your schedule, though, you can stop by the library anytime to get some individual help.

Another great resource available online is our website: caledonia.lib.mn.us. Thanks to one of our many dedicated volunteers, Cassie Rauk, the page has an updated look and more information for patrons who are browsing it. On it, you can find a calendar of the programs that we’re currently offering and new books and movies that the library has acquired. You can also access the online catalog, which connects you to all of the libraries around the state when you’re searching for an item. With the online catalog, you can request items from any library to be delivered here in Caledonia for convenient pickup.

By keeping up with modern technology, we hope to continue to provide you, our patrons, with products and services that fit into your lifestyle and allow you to access our collection from anywhere.

Around 3,000 books, movies and other materials are delivered daily to libraries throughout Southeast Minnesota by the capable hands of Alliance Courier as part of the interlibrary loan system set in place by SELCO.

This video, made by SELCO, explains a bit of the interlibrary loan process: the pull list.

We are constantly searching for the next great books for our patrons, but there are somewhere between 600,000 and 1,000,000 books published every year in the United States, so there is no way we can know about all of them.

That is where you come in!

If there is a title that you are dying to read and we don’t have it, let us know!  Tell the librarians about the book the next time you are in the library or you can fill out the form below.

With your help we can make the library even better!

Thank You!
