On Thursday, June 14, the library held its first ever passport club. We met the kids from SAC in the elementary library and took them on a “trip” to Australia. To start off, we played a get to know you game and the kids told us where they would go if they could travel anywhere in the world. After that, Ashley read a nonfiction book that taught us about the geography and people of Australia. Then the kids each got to decorate a boomerang and practice throwing it into a box.
I read the next book called Over in Australia, which was about the different types of animals and what they did. After we read that book, the kids got to help cook Australian foods. We split them into groups and they helped us cut kiwi, make whipped cream, toast bread and put vegemite on it, and prepare strawberries for a pavlova. After everyone finished making their foods, the kids went around to each station and took a sample of each food to eat during our last story. At the end of the story, the kids each got a passport book and a stamp of Australia to add to it. Each week, they will get a stamp from the country we visit to put in their passport book. They also wrote a postcard to tell their parents about what they learned. Next week, we will go to Turkey.
